Haldi Milk has been a part of Indian culture for centuries. In 2016 it exploded onto the Australian scene under the name The ‘Golden’ or Turmeric Latte, and has been praised for its health benefits.
Made from a blend of turmeric and other spices, like cinnamon and pepper, the orange-yellow brew is fast becoming the favoured morning pick-me-up for health the health conscious.
Nutritionist Lyndi Cohen says turmeric’s active compound, curcumin, is a natural antioxidant that can help relieve conditions such as osteoarthritis. Other benefits, she says, include helping people with diabetes manage their blood sugar levels and cholesterol levels.
A study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition in March this year, listed turmeric among the foods that can help prevent chronic inflammation. Long-standing inflammation can play a role in diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes.
Most health buffs like their turmeric latte’s ‘clean’ (caffeine free and usually made on almond milk), however you can also ask your barista to ‘make it a dirty golden’f you still want that caffeine pick-me-up.
But…is it all worth it?
To unlock the health benefits you apparently need to consumer 5 grams of turmeric a day. A standard ‘Golden’ Latte has around 2 grams so you need to be sipping almost 3 of these babies every day!
It would be easier to consume your turmeric in more traditional ways like a casserole or a curry (FYI guys, Memories of India does the best curries in the city). Which brings us back to one of our key health beliefs here at IOF – eat real food!!
Personally, I’m going to keep sipping away at these golden latte’s anyway.
Why? Because they’re delicious.
